Maximalism is the new buzz word for interior designers. Where Minimalism is the philosophy that less possessions equals a greater quality of life. Maximalism in design really is more is more! Here’s the thing, I think they can co-exist in the same room! I know what you’re thinking; there’s no way you can have a minimalist attitude and still decorate with a maximalist approach. However, you don’t need a lot of “things or possessions” to create a lush maximalist interior. The top 7 trends in bathroom design for this year will showcase the maximalist trend perfectly, plus how to achieve it without adding “things”. 2020 Bath Trends:
- Color Saturated High Gloss Tiles: 2020 is new colorful and shiny. Most bath tiles have a little sheen to them because they need to be water-resistant and easy to clean. But what’s new is the super shiny gloss finish that will replace the matte finish that has been ruling for far too long.
2. Wide Grout Lines: For years we have listened to every client say “I don’t want to see the grout lines. Put the tiles as close together as possible.” Well here come some grout lines. Time will tell if this trend takes over.
3. Asymmetrical Mirror & Sink Combos: I really love this trend for renovations. This is going to work amazing in some of the older condos we have here on the coast. So many baths were built with long countertops and small sinks with a wall to wall mirror. Now that everyone wants a smaller accent mirror it was difficult to position. This trend will make our life so much easier!
4. Brass is Back! Brushed Brass has a romantic feel that adds a little Luxe to your bathroom. It is a little bit of glamour that stuns against natural stone. Even a small accent like the frame of a mirror or the base of a sconce makes a major impact.
5. Deep Soaking Tubs: They never really went out of style, but lately I have seen an increase in Art Deco – inspired bathrooms and bathtubs.
6. Shaped Tile: The rectangle subway tile is getting pushed aside to make room for funkier shapes like hexagons, scallops, and geometric patterns. Opting for a shaped tile is a great way to make an impact if you aren’t willing to commit to a bold color.
7. Bold Color! Gone is the all-white room. In 2020 color is the biggest trend. Whether you choose neutrals or a darker color like teal or even terracotta, be sure to go bold. Whilst choosing a color, me mindful of how it can impact your mood. Green is optimistic, ochre is warm and relaxed, Blue is calming- how do you want your bathroom to feel.
As with all trends, they’re just trends. The final decision is yours and yours alone. Most of these trends can be incorporated into your design in small ways, working with your existing plan. Changing the mirror or updating the fixtures can have a big impact and add texture and color without adding clutter or cost. I hope these ideas inspire you to create your own bathroom sanctuary.
